SYNOPSIS/REVIEW:"The English title is an inaccurate and misleading translation, as it really has little to do with MacArthur or his children. However, it does focus on the impact of the Japanese loss of WWII through the eyes of children, and it's in those childhood responses, relationships, and dynamics that the film becomes charming. Counterpointing the world of children struggling to cope in guileless ways are adults dealing with the shift and disruption to their own lives and futures, and in Kurosawa-esq fashion (though more subtly), the ethical adult struggles of right and wrong, of giri and ninjo. We also get to see actor Juzo Itami before his directing debut as well as the film debut of Ken Watanabe. Cinematography is by Kazuo Miyagawa who was behind the lens for Rashomon, Yojimbo, and Ozu's Ukigusa Monogatari. It's a gentle, restrained view into the tumultuous transitions in Japan set in motion after the war defeat, full of humanity and compassion."

NOTE: Shinoda's abiding concern with his generations's struggle is addressed in a comment to an interviewer in 1986: "I was willing to sacrifice my life for the emperor. Ever since then I have wondered about the root of my patriotism. It is still an enigma to me. How can such absolutism take hold in any individual? Why did this moral imperative persist in Japan as a social phenomenon?" MacArthur's Children asks those questions through a story set in a world Shinoda first learned about by being young in it. SOURCE AND UPLOADERS NOTES:Uploaded to ADC by Lordretsudo. He said:"I made custom subtitles for this excellent film using the old VHS copy that can be found on here and at KG. However, when jaygator uploaded the R2J DVD, I found that around 20 minutes had been cut from the English version, mainly in the second half of the film. These scenes contained quite a lot of dialogue, and I am extremely grateful to Ellire, who kindly translated these scenes for us - many thanks, Ellire!"
DVD print quality was pretty good for 1984. This is so much better than the old hard subbed avi that has been around for a long time. The subs are good. Enjoy what must have been a very personal expression for director Shinoda who was 14 at the end of the war. Much of what we see here comes from his memories of the time. Great film.
A point some may find interesting, Masako Natsume who played the teacher, Komako, died of leukemia a year after making this film. She was 27 years old at the time.
