Synopsis:
Kosuke is 31, and tired of his hometown where nothing happens. On a whim, he departs for New York with dreams of making it big. 6 months later, he straggles home... defeated, and saddled with debt.

Awaiting him are his old friends, a caring sister, a disgruntled father ...and a bowl of noodles. Namely, "udon" noodles. The town is built around udon, sustained by udon, nationally famous for udon. The region even lends its name to a particular type of udon - "Sanuki Udon."

It is the town's fixation with udon that essentially drove Kosuke away. Little does he realize upon his inglorious return that he - and the rest of the free world - are about to rediscover the miraculous wonder of this local delicacy.

When the Daiei studio closed its doors in 1971, their biggest chanbara star Shintaro Katsu already had his own production company Katsu Production set up, and a distribution deal signed with Toho. With most directors and actors now liberated from their long-term contracts with the ailing major studios, and film work harder to come by, Katsu was able to pick and choose from a teeming pool of talent and lined up a series of high-profile projects. He cast Toshiro Mifune and Ayako Wakao to co-star with him in Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo, paired his brother Tomisaburo Wakayama with his favourite Daiei director Kenji Misumi for the Lone Wolf and Cub series, and lured Ken Takakura and Meiko Kaji into his fold for The Homeless, a loose remake of French director Robert Enrico's Les Aventuriers (1967).

As the family's generations-old sake making business begins to fail in the face of increasingly fierce competition, Manbei, the incorrigible elderly patriarch, rekindles an affair with an old flame, much to the disapproval of his daughter Fumiko. He is further distracted by his attempts to marry off his other two daughters: Akiko, the eldest and a widow with a small son, and Noriko, the youngest who is still single.

Uploader's Comments: The colors of the film have been heavily tampered with on Criterion's and Artifical Eye's releases. This Japanese transfer has a less filtered look, while also introducing a more green palette.

Synopsis: There is darkness behind the limelight. After recovering from a long-term sickness, retiring singer Wah Fong Ying (Liza Wang) has come to realize that she has failed to live a fulfilling life. With two failed marriages and strained relationships with her three children, Fong Ying is much lonelier than she admits. Summoning up all her courage, Fong Ying flies to Taiwan to mend her broken relationship with her oldest daughter. During this time, she comes across Hong Kong photographer Law Ben (Damian Lau), who is in Taiwan to fulfill his late wife’s (Michelle Yim) wish of returning to her ancestral home. Sparks fly when the extraordinary meets the ordinary. Both Fong Ying and Ben find their strength as they quietly support each other.

Encouraged by Ben, Fong Ying decides to perform one last time in a goodbye concert for her close friends and family, but her youngest daughter Tong Yan (Eliza Sam) reacts coldly to the invitation. Nonetheless, Fong Ying remains committed to her last concert and hires a new assistant Szeto Dik Dik (Linda Chung) and a new creative director, Song Sheung Hang (Alex Fong). Dik Dik and Sheung Han initially struggle to get along due to past misunderstandings, but they eventually cultivate a deep relationship. Just as Fong Ying starts to find the light again, she is once again attacked by darkness. While Sheung Hang was preparing a special issue to promote Fong Ying’s concert, he discovers an ugly secret that Fong Ying has been keeping for many years. Dik Dik finds out that Fong Ying and her uncle were involved in the past. Ben is also starting to have hallucinations…

Plot:

Synopsis

Mind Games is thriller-romance drama with many unexpected twists and suspense.
