Synopsis: Rickshaw man Tatsu has wandered to Osaka from Tokyo. He has quarrels with Kimiyakko, a geisha, and throws her into the river. But later, he falls in love with her. Yasaburo, the oyabun of the Nishikawa Gang, loves her very much too. However, as he likes Tatsu's dynamic personality, he volunteers to become a go-between for their marriage. Yasaburo gets tipped off by Yajima who wants to take over the territory of the Nishikawa Gang and is arrested and imprisoned. After his release, Yajima tries to kill him.

Uploader's Comments: This is a nice little film with Kato's usual assured direction and playful camera angels. While it takes a while to really get started and can get a bit confusing occasionally, the film just keeps on getting better as it progresses. Recommended if you're into 60s and 70s yakuza films.

While this was first planned as one of the early yakuza movies, which has begun to become more popular than samurai films, Kato Tai arranged it to a melodrama with a touch of comedy. Uchida Ryohei was becoming rapidly popular for his original acting style (he's probably most famous for portraying evil characters though). The Osaka Railway Station which appears many times from the beginning of the film is a replica built in the studio of almost the same size as the actually early 1900-structure.

The film furthers Kato's low camera level, long take, depth staging aesthetics w/ densely composed image & superb use of the scope format.
BTW. It is often considered as a yakuza film version of Inagaki/Itami's celebrated Life of Matsu the Untamed (aka The Rickshaw Man) story.

Synopsis
Tokuzo Akiyama (Takeru Satoh) is a young man living in a rural area. One day, he eats cutlet. That experience leads him to become a cook for western style food. He first goes to Tokyo and then Paris, France to learn about the culinary arts. Fighting against discrimination and prejudice, he becomes a chef at the Hotel Ritz in Paris, France. At the age of 26, he becomes the chef for the Emperor of Japan.

In 1904, at New Year's, the Akiyama family in Fukui prefecture were full of hope except for one thing. Shuzo (Tetta Sugimoto) worries that his second son, Tokuzo (Takeru Satoh) just quits things too easily unlike the first son, Shutaro (Ryohei Suzuki). The worried father arranges his son to marry Toshiko (Haru Kuroki) of the Takahama family who runs a seaweed merchant. One day, newly-married Tokuzo encounters Sergeant Tanabe (Hideaki Ito) of the Sabae Regiment while delivering seaweed. Tokuzo has a piece of freshly-fried cutlet offered by Tanabe and is struck by the overwhelming taste. ~ TBS

Synopsis

After a set-back in life, former Hong Kong undercover detective Pau Kai-chung (Chin Siu-ho) heads to the Wudang Mountains in Hubei, China to get away from life. At Wudang he re-connects with his former marital arts senior Mo Yee-shan (Yuen Qiu), who now operates an inn and martial arts school in the Wudang Mountains. She also takes in a mentally retarded man named Ho Ching-tung (Derek Kok) with a mysterious past. Kai-chung takes up a job as a chef at Yee-shan's inn. All is peaceful until a group of martial art students lead by Yee-shan's daughter Lok Yeung (Tavia Yeung) arrives. Lok Yeung and Kai-chung had previously met in Hong Kong, their encounter in Wudang brings back painful memories for Kai-chung. But Lok Yeung's true intentions for returning to Wudang is to persuade her mother to sell the inn and martial arts school to a Hong Kong investment group. Yee-shan makes a deal with Lok Yeung, that she will agree to sell the inn and martial arts school if Lok Yeung can win a competition within three months. Yee-shan pretends to be injured so Kai-chung would takeover as instructor at the martial art school. Soon Ching-tung regains his mind and exposes Kai-chung's true identity, which puts all at Wudang in danger.

Synopsis: The epic battles between the Heike and Genji (Taira and Minamoto clans) take centerstage as the defeated leader of the Genji, Minamoto Yoritomo resolves to end his clan's exile and avenge the brutal loss in December, 1159 as they had fought under the white banner of the Emperor, while the Taira fought under their red flags in a battle to the death. Synopsis

Synopsis
Ieji Hisashi, a salaryman who works for a securities company, has a fuzzy memory of the recent five years because of an accident at his job posting. Synopsis: Defying his parents, Hsiao Kang drops out of the local crammer to head for the bright lights of downtown Taipei. He falls in with Ah Tze, a petty hood, and their relationships is a confused mixture of hero-worship and rivalry that soon leads to trouble.

Uploader's Comments: This has some differences with much of Tsai's later work, notably the use of hand-held cameras and a fairly prevalent score. You can already see inklings of a lot of what he's known for today, like the long takes and sparse dialog. I think it's one of Tsai's best and thus a great example of the Taiwanese new wave cinema.

You never feel that Tsai is trying to shoehorn conventional devices into an unconventional project; it's more like he's practicing or experimenting with such focus and control that he always seems to be testing notions and propositions rather than just futzing around. "Rebels" is as much a film about observation and sensation and feeling as Tsai's subsequent movies, and it's also the unofficial opening chapter in what looks to be a loosely linked ongoing series. But it's lighter than much of his later work—improbably so, given the unstinting view of poverty cited throughout this review.

It’s an omnibus series about four different couples living together in one apartment complex. Oh Do Si and Ryu Du Ri play the main couple in their 30s, who’ve been living together for two years. Oh Do Si is a voice actor, and Ryu Du Ri is a reviewer who runs a blog. They’re an average 30-something couple and they simply chose to live together instead of getting married. Choi Jin Nye and Jung Young Joon are couple that’s twelve years apart in age. She’s a penny-pincher who basically supports her younger boyfriend, and he’s a musician who carries a guitar but doesn’t know how to play it. They’ve been living together for a year, and though they fight like cats and dogs, they’re always quick to make up. Ha Seoul Eun and Park Hwan Jong are a 20-something couple that just moved in together. She’s the type of woman who doesn’t want her boyfriend to know that she isn’t the perfect embodiment of femininity, and works tirelessly to keep up the illusion. Lee Joon Jae is a loner who prefers to stay at home, but is forced to get a roommate for financial reasons. He doesn’t even want to exchange unnecessary small talk with the guy, and thus seeks out a foreigner who can’t speak Korean very well. Takuya is the new roommate, a young man from Japan who’s on a trip around the world. Takyua thinks it a shame that Lee Jae-joon is wasting his youth as a homebody, and begins to draw him out into the world.
