Synopsis:
In the autumn of 1947, villagers in Qing Shi County, at the bank of the Little River, Shanbei Province, all dogde the invasion of Hu Zongnan’s troop, leaving the obstinate grandpa’s family. A branch radio team is stationed in grandpa’s yard and set up the antenna for the Captain to direct the communication soldiers in order to search for the Central Communist Party. Grandpa’s family is not allowed to cook in the day time, or it may give away their position. Meanwhile, they try to win grandpa over by any means. In despair, the officer ran to the cellar but was beat to death by grandpa. When the war is over, grandpa sends his beloved son to join the army. When the pretty girl and Lao Ma asked grandpa for help, he said nothing and left quietly. Late at night, the guerrilla forces besiege the yard. The officers and soldiers make a last-ditch fight, but Lao Ma and the pretty woman soldier were shot by the officers. After makin friend with Lao Ma, grandpa gets a clear understanding of the officer. He is extremly shocked by the sign that the officers tortured the messenger Tianshun and his girl friend, a pretty woman soldier and Tianshun was beat to death. [sic; DVD Cover]

If I understand correctly it won second prize for best film of 1984 by the Ministry of Culture.

Sound and picture quality aren't the best (the DVD doesn't offer any better quality) and the English subtitles are rather bad at times (probably auto-translated), but imho it's still worth watching.
