Review: Here is a custom DVD for Obayashi's cheesy adaptation of Kazuo Umezu's Drifting Classroom. If you're a fan of Umezu's original manga, but aren't familiar with Obayashi, you may end up disappointed. Obayashi has always been the type of director to revel in the kitsch of a given era. In this case, the film is one of the post-Goonies group-of-kids adventure films that were common in the late 80's. Of course Obayashi recognizes the kitsch for what it is, and likewise amplifies it to extreme levels, but this may not be so easily forgiven by an audience of 20 years later. Yes, The Drifting Classroom is a bad movie in a good way, so definitely check it out if you're a fan of those. It's also filled with very stylish analog special effects, as to be expected from Obayashi.
