"This movie is considered one of the best movies ever made in China, and for good reason.  I studied it for a course on Chinese cinema where we examined it from many viewpoints.  Beyond this, This Life of Mine gives a realistic portrayal of life in the latter years of the Republic, giving credence to the instability of that regime by depicting its effects on the protagonist.  It's generational template is one that many "5th Gen" Chinese film directors recapitulated in the 80s-90s (ie, Blue Kite) to portray the hardships of the Great Leap/Cultural Revolution.  For those interested in Chinese history and cinema history in general, this is a must-see film" (Onieros)
