Shiina Ringo debuted in 1999 with her album Muzai Moratorium. As one of her most succesful releases, selling almost a million copies and debuting on number one, motivated the young Shiina to pursue a career in music. Her following record, Shousou Strip, was even more of a succes, both economically, where it sold over 2 million records, and critically gaining the praise of being the greatest japanese rock album of 2003 from several sources. Knowing that she didn't have to focus too much on commercial succes, her experimentations with how long you can strech pop music, before it loses it's values are best shown in her 2003 album, Karuki Zamen Kuri no Hana. though one of her most daring albums, this is among many the favorite, as her perfect blend of experimentation and pop reveals an even more powerful effect.
Her commercial succes is now much lower than to begin with, but that hasn't compromised her music; Sanmon Gossip, her 2009 album, is in itself a pearl in her discography and well worth listening to.
