SYNOPSIS/REVIEW:

"Now in his late 70s, Imai directed his final and most significant films, Senso to Seishin (War and Youth). In a prologue, a contemporary Japanese schoolgirl (played by actress Yuki Kudo) tries to discover facts about the war from her father, whose memories are too painful for him to share. Then she learns about her mute aunt's dead child, who was lost during the Allied firebombing of Tokyo in 1945. The film then shifts to tell the story of the aunt (also played by Kudo), and how she loses her husband and child in the chaos of the air raids. Imai used donations from air raid survivors to underwrite the film so he could make and distribute it without the control of major studios, thus capping his career with a thought-provoking, powerful film made completely independently. A few months after its international release, Imai died in Toyko.

The flashback parts of the film are decoloured (virtually black and white) except for the flashbacks of the firestorm. Imai did a great job of depicting the firestorm created by the incendiary bombing of Tokyo in 1945. The technique used by the US airforce of dropping different kinds of bombs in separate waves one following the other and both at low levels was very efficient. Read the quotes from Mark Selden's article below if you want more details.

This film was very personal for Imai. He lived through the time in Tokyo. But he remains objective and also emphasizes that Japan was not guiltless having perpetrated similar carnage on other countries. What impresses me most about Imai's directing here is that, though the subject matter is very distressing, the film overall manages to be bright, upbeat, respectful, and even hopeful. No small feat and a great offering from Tadashi Imai to end his career on.

- A few quotes from Mark Selden's "Forgotten Holocaust" for those who may not know much about what happened on March 9-10, 1945 in Tokyo.

"The full fury of firebombing and napalm was unleashed on the night of March 9-10, 1945 when LeMay sent 334 B-29s low over Tokyo from the Marianas. Their mission was to reduce the city to rubble, kill its citizens, and instill terror in the survivors, with jellied gasoline and napalm that would create a sea of flames. Stripped of their guns to make more room for bombs, and flying at altitudes averaging 7,000 feet to evade detection, the bombers, which had been designed for high-altitude precision attacks, carried two kinds of incendiaries: M47s, 100-pound oil gel bombs, 182 per aircraft, each capable of starting a major fire, followed by M69s, 6-pound gelled-gasoline bombs, 1,520 per aircraft in addition to a few high explosives to deter firefighters. Plot Synopsis
Hooyun, an elementary school student, lives with his father and younger brother and sister since his mother died of illness. One day his father learns that he is about to lose his job so Hujan decides to quit school and become and ice candy peddler. A girl named Mimpi who is in the same school often goes to visit a town on the Thai-Malaysian border to help in her family’s business. Hooyun hears from Mimpi that the work of bearing white rice is dangerous and against the law but it pays very well, so his father goes out to look for him. His father is involved in a train accident and is now lame. In order to provide financial support for his family, Hujan gets more and more deeply involved in illegal work, and as he is follows Islam principles, with strong morals, he finally gives up his illegal work and together with Mimpi begins to sell flowers.

Synopsis

Synopsis

Synopsis:
Documentarist Kawase Naomi's first feature film set in the mountainous Nishiyoshino region of Nara Prefecture depicts the life of a family consisting of Tahara Kouzou, his mother Sachiko, wife Yasuyo, daughter Michiru and his nephew Eisuke.
In an attempt to revive the small village's economy, a railroad project is started planned by Kouzou. When the project is cancelled Kouzou falls into depression and the family struggles getting through.

Although Moe no Suzaku is a fictional story, Kawase has used some documentary techniques. The real town has lost many of its population, and also contains a partially completed tunnel. Kawase visited the town for years before making the film, and was helped during shooting by local people. Kawase also renovated an old farmhouse to act as the main set. The film does not depend heavily on plot, drawing its strength from a highly aesthetic style and some compassionate portrayals of the characters, who seem unable to express themselves and their feelings.
