Lav Diaz's vision of our nation's near-future is not very different from how it is presently. Despite that, literature and art flourishes amidst fascist asphyxiation. The nation has experienced similar circumstances under the Marcos regime, and faint but resounding reminders under the present regime. This is Diaz’s science fiction, which in turn is a wry observation of the state of the Philippine nation. There is not a spark of progress in display asManila in 2011 looks very much like Manila in 1990, made more melancholic by the uncomfortable stillness under the military junta. Instead, an atmosphere of paranoia pervades the near-noxious air.

A rare Taiwan fantasy with visuals from Tsuburaya Productions (famous for Ultraman and Godzilla TV and film special effects) aka Legend of Chu Hung Wu, Tsu Hong Wu is a highly fictionalized fantasy retelling of the early years of Zhu Yuanzhang’s life that was obviously geared toward younger audiences. The tale actually begins in Heaven, where the various gods are busy paving the way for a new emperor. The very basic facts of Zhu Yuanzhang’s life are ostensibly correct, but it takes a rather unexpected turn into traditional giant monster territory, with a Taoist priest summoning a gigantic red-haired ogre (amusingly referred to as ‘superman’ in the subtitles) to destroy our heroes, who are in turn rescued when a golden dragon (the animal manifestation of one of the deities from earlier in the film) rises from the ocean to do battle with said ogre. Produced through the co-operation of none other than Tsuburaya Productions, directed by Koichi Takano (Ultraman, Ultraseven, Iron King) with art direction by Yoshio Suzuki and puppet operation by Sadao Tsukumoto.

Note about the subtitles: if Koibumi's subs were god-awful, I don't know what I should call these. I had never seen something like that, actually it was more a doc file with lots of lines written on it... To make a long story short, I had to create the whole timing, and took me about 24 hrs of exasperating work. Several other adjustments and retranslation works have been made, hoping I didn't forget anything...
This is Kinoshita's first film after the war, and one of his most moving. It may seem rhetorical towards the ending, but I'd rather call that "optimism"; all in all, it's a very caustic work: Kinoshita, like the majority of Japanese in those months, certainly must have been not only disappointed, but also quite enraged by the army's policy and many other matters.

"Kinoshita's important contribution to the immediate postwar cycle of films concerns the sufferings of a liberal family disintegrating under the pressures of the war and welcoming the dawn of democracy. Kinoshita shot Morning for the Osone Family within the confines of a one-house interior set, capturing the emotional insularity of the wartime experience for any one family. The focus, typically, is on the mother, who allows her militarist brother-in-law, a self-serving reactionary, to dictate the family's destiny. Thus she loses two sons to the war, and a third is imprisoned for his antiwar activities. Kinoshita at once underscores the mother's impotence and the strength of her convictions and those of her more outspoken daughter."

Synopsis
